All Hail Tiger Salamanders

Salamanders are the amphibians that kinda look like lizards but they're not. The barred tiger salamander is one of the largest dwelling salamander species in the world. They can be found from southwestern Canada to western US and nothern Mexico.

They can be fed with baby mice, baby frogs, earthworms and crickets. The salamander will grab anything that moves when it's still young including chopsticks, fingers, something that's not even edible. It can hunt really well when it's hungry, although it will lose it's entusiasm if it's being fed too much.

If earthworms or crickets are not available for whatever reason, the salamander will happily eat a small piece of meat.

Salamander's box

The salamander is being held at a large plastic storage box with a lid with holes drilled in it. I used to keep it in a 4-litre bucket when it was young, but salamander didn't like it and escaped two times. The first time I found it two days later under a washing machine. Another time it went to a bag full of moss on the floor.

The bottom of the box is covered with moss. On the side there's a small container with water. The salamander sits in it when noone looks. Also there's two pieces of hard bark. One piece of bark sits on top of the water container, and another one covers some moss. Most of the time the salamander would be hidden in the moss, however in the night time it would sit on top of the water container bark, "king-of-the-hill" like.

Salamander's signals

The salamander can send and receive the alien signals. We don't know what those signals are about, but sometimes I can see the salamander's head turned straight up, like an antenna. I wonder if she's a visitor from another planet. The salamander is a perfect cover for an alien - it seems so dumb that noone would take it seriously. In the meantime, the salamander would think of its plan to conquer the world. I am sure of that.

Salamander's gaze

When the salamander is hungry (or whenever it could smell cooking dinner), it would come out and stare at you with its eyes. The salamander's eyes are shiny and golden. The asking stare of a dog is nothing comparing to salamander's. The closest stare you can get is by the very famous hypnotic toad. It looks at me this way every time I come home and not bring crickets.
